Pakistan’s path to the 2026 Hockey World Cup has been revealed after the conclusion of the 2025 Asia Cup in India, with the qualifiers now the only option left for the team.
The Green Shirts will face Bangladesh in a special play-off series to determine the final Asian team that will take part in next year’s World Cup qualifiers.
Pakistan boycotted the Asia Cup in India, depriving the team of a chance at direct qualification for the World Cup. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) then announced a pathway for Pakistan, which includes a three-match series against the team that finished sixth in the Asia Cup.
Bangladesh finished sixth after a loss to Japan and will now host Pakistan in December. The highly anticipated series will serve as a direct qualifier for the World Cup Qualifier round, which is set to begin on February 28, 2026.
For Pakistan, the stakes couldn’t be higher. A victory in this series is the only remaining avenue to keep their World Cup hopes alive. While Pakistan has historically dominated the head-to-head record, the pressure of a sudden-death series adds an unpredictable element.
Eight teams have already qualified for next year’s Hockey World Cup, with one more from Africa set to join the list, while the qualifiers will determine the remaining seven teams.
The FIH’s decision to provide this opportunity underscores the importance of a team of Pakistan’s stature in the global hockey landscape. With four World Cup titles, the Green Shirts are a historic powerhouse, and their absence would be a significant loss.
The road ahead is challenging, but for Pakistan, the upcoming series against Bangladesh is the first, and most vital, step on the journey to the 2026 Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.
