Pakistan Likely to Get Easier Path for Hockey World Cup Qualification

Pakistan hockey team has reportedly received a lifeline from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in its quest to qualify for the 2026 Hockey World Cup, set to take place in Belgium and the Netherlands.

This development comes weeks after Pakistan boycotted the Hockey Asia Cup in India, which serves as a primary qualification tournament for Asian sides for the global event.

According to The News, a senior FIH official has confirmed that Pakistan will likely be offered a special play‑off opportunity later this year to secure a place in the World Cup qualifiers scheduled for next year. Pakistan would face the team finishing sixth at the ongoing Asia Cup in a three‑match away series, with the winner advancing to the qualification tournament.

Japan, Chinese Taipei, Bangladesh, and Kazakhstan are the teams that could finish sixth at the Asia Cup, with official confirmation due on September 7.

Victory in that series would push Pakistan into the World Cup Qualifiers, scheduled for February–March 2026, where Canada, Chile, the United States, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Austria, England, France, and Poland await. Four more teams from the ongoing Asia Cup and one from the Hockey Africa Cup of Nations will also join the fray. Just seven teams from these sixteen will eventually qualify for the World Cup.

For Pakistan, once the undisputed giants of world hockey with four World Cup titles, this represents a second chance to reclaim lost ground. Recent performances suggest improvement, but the road remains far from easy.

So far, seven teams have secured their spots at the 2026 event: hosts Belgium and the Netherlands, along with Australia, Spain, Argentina, New Zealand and Germany. Continental champions from Asia and Africa will add more names to the list, while the rest will battle it out in next year’s qualifiers.

For Pakistan, the equation is clear: win the play‑off, stay in contention through the qualifiers, and aim to restore the nation’s place among hockey’s elite.
