Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi announced on Monday that Rawalpindi Railway Station is being upgraded into a “safe and smart” facility in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), with completion targeted for October 15.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a new rack for the Subak Khurram railcar (104DN), Abbasi said the project includes executive lounges, modern waiting areas, escalators, and free Wi-Fi to enhance passenger experience.
He added that the cleanliness and overall facilities at railway stations are being improved nationwide.
The minister said that Pakistan Railways is undergoing reforms to provide modern and comfortable travel, including the phased replacement of racks on four railcars running between Lahore and Rawalpindi.
A new service between Margalla and Rawalpindi stations is also being launched, with support from the Capital Development Authority. An interchange will be built on 9th Avenue near Margalla Station, while an electric bus service will link Rawalpindi Railway Station to Shibli Chowk.
Abbasi confirmed that the Narowal section will be restored on October 25, while 400 upgraded coaches and 60 newly manufactured ones will be added by December 31. He also highlighted plans for biometric passenger identification to enhance safety and security.
