The Sindh government is preparing to roll out Pakistan’s first government-run electric vehicle (EV) taxi service by December.
According to officials, the initiative is aimed at providing eco-friendly and affordable travel options in urban centers, with Karachi expected to be the first city to benefit. The decision was finalized in a meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who also oversees the information and transport departments.
“The Sindh government will be the first in Pakistan to operate a state-run EV taxi service. This project reflects Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision to introduce safe, modern, and sustainable transport for the public,” Memon said in a statement after the meeting.
In its initial phase, part of the EV taxi fleet will be reserved for women, continuing the government’s focus on gender-sensitive mobility. This move follows the earlier introduction of the Pink Bus Service for female passengers and the Pink Scooty scheme.
Transport department officials noted that the EV taxi project is part of a broader strategy to reduce emissions, cut dependence on conventional fuels, and offer safer public transport options.
