GCC Railway Completion Date and Route Map Revealed

The long-awaited GCC Railway is scheduled to be completed by December 2030, connecting all six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations—Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

Stretching across an estimated 2,177 kilometers, the mega-network is expected to significantly reduce travel times, enhance mobility for residents, and increase trade and investment flows across the region.

A Game-Changer for Connectivity

Once operational, the railway will transform regional travel. For example, a trip between Abu Dhabi and Riyadh will take less than five hours, offering a fast and efficient alternative to road or air travel. Beyond passenger convenience, the project is also seen as a critical step toward deepening economic integration among GCC states.

Challenges Ahead

To make the network fully functional, member states will need to harmonize safety, technical, and environmental standards. Streamlined customs and immigration procedures will also be essential to ensure smooth cross-border movement for both passengers and freight, minimizing delays at checkpoints.

Parallel Development in the UAE

Alongside the regional project, the UAE is advancing its own national rail network—Etihad Rail—which is set to open next year. The system will link 11 key locations across the country, reducing travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to just 30 minutes, with trains running at speeds of up to 350 km/h.

In Sharjah, construction is rapidly progressing, offering hope to daily commuters who currently spend long hours stuck in traffic while traveling to other emirates, especially Dubai.
