NADRA Launches New System for CNIC Cancellation After Death

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced that it will no longer charge any fee for cancelling Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) after a person’s death.

According to a NADRA spokesperson, a pilot project has been launched in three districts of Punjab under the Civil Registration Management System (CRMS) to simplify the process of registering vital events such as births, marriages, divorces, and deaths. The project uses a mobile app to register deaths directly with the provincial CRMS and will be expanded nationwide in the coming weeks.

The spokesperson said that coordination between NADRA and provincial CRMS systems has been enhanced to ensure real-time data sharing. Once a death is registered through the provincial system, the deceased’s CNIC can be cancelled via the Pak ID app without any additional cost.

To maintain accuracy, NADRA requires biometric verification from family members visiting its offices for other services before finalizing the CNIC cancellation. This verification step helps ensure that records are correctly updated, particularly as provincial systems are still being equipped with biometric devices.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at making the process easier for citizens while improving record accuracy and transparency in Pakistan’s national database.
