A heart-wrenching tragedy struck Indian domestic cricket on Sunday when veteran fast bowler Ahmer Khan collapsed and died moments after bowling the final delivery of a match in Muradabad district, Uttar Pradesh.
According to Indian media reports, the incident took place at the Bilari Sugar Mill Ground during a fixture organized by the Uttar Pradesh Veterans Cricket Association. The match was being contested between local teams Muradabad and Sambhal.
Muradabad batted first and set a challenging total, leaving Sambhal needing 14 runs off the final four deliveries. Ahmer, tasked with bowling the decisive over, produced a dramatic finish that secured an 11-run victory for his side.
However, the joy of victory quickly turned into horror. Moments after releasing his final ball, Ahmer appeared to have trouble breathing and collapsed on the field. His teammates and a doctor present at the venue rushed to his aid and attempted to revive him through CPR before he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Doctors, however, declared him dead upon arrival.
Although such incidents are not uncommon on the cricketing field, the sudden passing of the experienced cricketer, who had long been active in local veterans’ tournaments, has left the regional cricket community in mourning. Tournament officials and players paid tribute to Ahmer Khan, describing him as a passionate sportsman who remained dedicated to the game until his final moment.
