FBR Announces Decision on Income Tax Filing Deadline

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns for Tax Year 2025. Originally due on September 30, 2025, the deadline had already been pushed to October 15 under Circular No. 4 of 2025‑26. Now, in response to appeals from trade groups and tax lawyers, it will be extended further – until October 31, 2025.

Business groups, tax professionals, and other stakeholders had urged the FBR to provide more time. Their requests cited difficulties like delays in acquiring financial records, glitches in the IRIS e‑filing portal, and challenges in integrating Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems with FBR systems.

Officials had earlier resisted further extensions, warning of penalties for late filers. But pressure reportedly grew, prompting reconsideration. The new extension is being framed under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 — the same legal authority used for the earlier change to October 15.

In the first three and a half months of the current fiscal year (up to October 15), the number of people who filed tax returns has exceeded 5.06 million, compared to 4.60 million during the same period last year. A total of 7.6 million individuals filed tax returns in 2024–25.

For millions of individuals and businesses preparing their returns, this extension is a relief. The additional two weeks should ease the burden on taxpayers struggling with technical delays or documentation challenges.

However, taxpayers should not wait until the last minute. Errors, slow portal performance, and incomplete submissions remain risks.

    • There is no need to pay fees to file income tax return, you can file it your self. There are videos available on youtube for that purpose.

      • Stop misguiding people. I am a tax professional and people came to us with messed up returns, sometimes impossible to correct. When asked, they all said we filed return after watching youtube videos or some unprofessional person filed. Every person has different source of income, different asset management plan. Better get some professional to file your income tax returns. Now a days many professionals are filling returns against very less charges. Saving 2-3 thousand isn’t going to cost much if it can save you from getting FBR notice. And yes file your return timely, dont hold it for last days.

      • It is still difficult for a common man who lacks sufficient financial knowledge and experience to complete the required details

    • Even though I filed my returns on time, I view the extension as a facilitation, not an injustice to those who fulfilled their responsibility on-time

  • Frequent extensions of income tax return filling dates have badly eroded the credibility of FBR. Most of tax payers have taken for granted that the FBR will again extend the date as usual

  • Every year this drama continues of deadline extension.. No surprise. But this time FBR sending harassment SMS quoting high transactions (incorrect figures) in your accounts as basis and reprimanding to file retirns… WHY..????? interestingly, I amd my wife both have filed seperate returns but still received this repeated harassment SMS today.. Reminders could have been more civilized instead of threatening… Question to FBR

  • If Income tax Ordinance restrict tax payer to file returns till September 30 every year then why FBR is on regular basis extend dates for filing of tax returns. It’s a serious matter on FBR and it’s laws credibility.
If FBR always extend the dates then FBR should revised the timeline from September 30 to December 31 every year without further extension in order to create respect in eyes of those tax payers who are discharging their duties in National Interest and voluntarily file their tax returns on given timeline i.e. September 30 every year.

  • Despite submission, why FBR is issuing reminder SMS with reference to. High level of ones financial transaction mentioned, seems like FBR reprimindung not reminding tax payer as if we are cincealing such declarations…

  • Thanks for giving time to everyone because too much clints and income tax practicener are one ,very difficult for them to do their job, thanks the date should be at least 30th November so they finish their work.
