In a heartbreaking turn of events, Afghanistan has officially withdrawn from the upcoming T20I tri-nation series in Pakistan.
Despite reportedly denying the claims earlier, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has now taken the decision following an escalation in military conflict between the two countries in recent days.
The tri-series, set to begin on November 17 in Rawalpindi and Lahore, was to feature Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. It would have marked the first time a tri-nation series involving Afghanistan was hosted on Pakistani soil. However, the ACB confirmed its withdrawal following what it described as a “tragic incident” in the Urgun district of Paktika province, where three cricketers allegedly lost their lives.
According to a statement posted on the ACB’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the attack occurred while a group of players was returning home from a friendly cricket match in Sharana, the provincial capital. The assault resulted in several fatalities, including three promising cricketers.
“The ACB considers this a great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family,” the statement read. “As a gesture of respect to the victims, it was decided to withdraw from participating in the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I Series.”
This withdrawal comes at a time when diplomatic relations between the two neighbours are under strain. The series, initially seen as an opportunity to ease tensions through the universal language of sport, has instead become a sombre reminder of the fragile reality in the region.
Cricket fans in Pakistan had eagerly anticipated the clash, especially given the rising competitiveness between the two sides in recent years. The last time the teams faced off was in August, just ahead of the Asia Cup, in a closely contested tri-series that drew high viewership and passionate support.
With Sri Lanka still slated to participate, it remains unclear whether the PCB will seek a replacement team or modify the tournament format altogether.
The ball is now in the PCB’s court, as fans await word on how the tournament will proceed. With barely a month left, any changes would require swift coordination. Whether a bilateral series with Sri Lanka will be arranged, or a new third team invited, remains to be seen.
