Traffic police across Punjab have intensified action against smoke-emitting vehicles, issuing more than 40,400 challans in the past three weeks alone, according to the department’s spokesperson.
In total, fines exceeding Rs. 80.8 million have been imposed during this period. The crackdown includes not only ticketing but also administrative measures: 51 vehicles had their fitness certificates suspended, while route permits for over 63 vehicles were canceled.
Further action included the registration of FIRs against 19 violators and the impounding of more than 7,700 vehicles. Hefty fines were also issued to more than 2,300 vehicles transporting mud without proper coverings.
Vehicles found emitting smoke are being fined under the Rs2,000 challan rule, the spokesperson said.
DIG Traffic Muhammad Waqas Nazir urged citizens to refrain from using poor-quality engine oil and fuel, stressing that traffic officers must take proactive steps to help make Punjab smog-free.
