Pakistan Railways has decided to end the 25-year-old contractual system for porters at Lahore Railway Station. According to an official notification, porters at Lahore Station will now work directly under the supervision of the station manager, instead of contractors.
This change means porters will no longer be required to pay commissions from their earnings to private contractors, a practice that has been in place for decades.
Under the revised rules, each porter will charge passengers Rs. 70 per trip and will be allowed to carry a maximum of 40 kilograms of luggage per trip.
Railway officials described the decision as a major step toward the economic stability of porters and a way to restore accountability within the system. By bringing porters under direct administrative control, Pakistan Railways hopes to reduce exploitation and improve working conditions for hundreds of laborers who rely on station-based work for their livelihoods.
