Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has opened up about the reasoning behind Babar Azam’s return to the national squad after a long absence, confirming that the star batter’s return has little to do with his form but more of a tactical nuance.
Babar, who has not played a single T20I since Mike Hesson took charge, was recently recalled for the upcoming series against South Africa and the tri-nation tournament next month. His absence during the Asia Cup was widely seen as a factor in Pakistan’s lack of composure, and many believed his return was the PCB’s way of correcting that decision. However, Hesson revealed that Babar’s comeback is linked to Fakhar Zaman requesting time off.
Speaking to reporters, Mike Hesson said the decision was based on both strategy and player availability.
“I endorse Babar Azam’s selection, with Fakhar Zaman sent to first-class cricket. We’ve had a conversation with Fakhar, and he wants to come back into the One-Day setup, so we’ve given him a break from T20Is.
“That created an opportunity for another top-order player, and it’s a great chance to get Babar back into the squad. He’s likely to bat at three, and I’m confident he’ll do well in that role,” Hesson said.
Although Babar was not picked in earlier squads under Mike Hesson, the coach had always kept the door open for his return. While Babar has mostly opened the innings in T20Is, his expected shift to one-drop means Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub will continue as openers.
With Babar anchoring the innings and Fakhar focusing on ODIs, Pakistan’s white-ball setup is undergoing another tactical reshuffle. This could prove crucial for the team especially with the T20 World Cup just around the corner.
