PTA Warns Public About Online Job Scams

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong warning to citizens about the growing risks of online job scams and SIM card fraud. The authority says cybercriminals are using fake job listings and free SIM card offers to steal personal data and money.

Online Job Scams on the Rise

Social media is now flooded with online job offers, promising high salaries and flexible hours. The PTA warns that many of these ads are fake. Scammers pose as companies or use online surveys to collect photos, locations, and other sensitive information from job seekers. The PTA urges everyone to verify job offers thoroughly before applying, stressing that personal safety should come before any financial gain.

SIM Card Fraud and Biometric Data Theft

Street vendors in major cities have been selling free SIM cards, luring people with promises of unlimited calls and internet. The PTA cautions that these offers are often a front for stealing fingerprints, thumb impressions, and other biometric data. Scammers especially target women and senior citizens with fake financial aid schemes or free SIM cards.

SIM cards obtained through these scams are frequently used for identity theft, financial fraud, and other criminal activities. The PTA reminds citizens that giving a SIM card registered in your name to someone else is a criminal offense and punishable by law. People should never share personal or biometric information with unverified sources.

Recent Case Highlights Growing Threat

Recently, a Pakistani citizen lost Rs 85,000 after a fraudster cloned his mobile SIM and accessed his bank account in Hyderabad. The cloned SIM allowed the criminal to carry out multiple unauthorized transactions. This incident has raised serious concerns about the security of mobile SIM registrations and the rising threat of digital identity theft in Pakistan.

Experts warn that these scams are becoming more sophisticated, exploiting weaknesses in telecom verification systems. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has launched an inquiry into the case, requesting full account and transaction details from the bank and telecom provider to track down the culprits.

Stay Safe: Verify Before You Share

The PTA urges all citizens to stay vigilant, verify online job offers, and avoid sharing personal or biometric data with unknown sources. Protecting your information is the first step in staying safe from digital fraud.
