The Sindh government is set to roll out a locally developed, sensor-equipped scanner stick aimed at helping visually impaired individuals navigate their surroundings more safely and independently. Developed by NED University’s Biomedical Engineering Department, this assistive device marks a first for the province.
According to the Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Tauha Ahmed Farooqi, the scanner stick will be distributed free of cost during the initial phase of a pilot program scheduled to begin later this month. He noted that Sindh is home to over six million children and adults with physical or mental disabilities, including those with autism.
The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Sindh government and NED University, which signed a formal agreement to begin distribution. The scanner stick is one of several innovations developed by the university to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.
In addition to the scanner stick, other devices under development in this collaboration include:
Farooqi confirmed that all of these devices, including the scanner sticks, will be provided free of charge to eligible users in Sindh.
