Does GTA 6 Hold Record for Longest Development Period for a Video Game?

Rockstar Games has officially delayed the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI to November 19, 2026, raising questions about whether the highly anticipated title now holds the record for the longest development time in gaming history.

Despite the long wait, GTA 6 does not hold the Guinness World Record for the most protracted development period. That distinction still belongs to Duke Nukem Forever, which spent a staggering 14 years and 43 days in development. Originally announced on April 28, 1997, by 3D Realms, Duke Nukem Forever finally hit shelves on June 10, 2011.

In comparison, Rockstar first confirmed that a new GTA entry was in development in February 2022. Although speculation and leaks had surrounded the project for years prior, no official word came until that announcement. If we count from that 2022 confirmation to the new November 2026 release date, the development time totals about 4 years and 9 months, well short of Duke Nukem’s record.

Still, if one considers the gap since GTA V launched in 2013, the wait for GTA 6 will have stretched over 13 years. That would place it very close to the record, though it’s important to distinguish between a company not releasing a new title and active development time.

Rockstar’s most recent statement explains that the delay is intended to give the team more time to polish the game to the standard fans expect. The studio emphasized its commitment to quality, stating that the extra time will help deliver an experience worthy of the GTA franchise’s legacy.

So, while GTA 6 has certainly tested fans’ patience, it still falls short of claiming the title for the longest development cycle, at least for now.

  • Aww sheet, here we go again! I was always telling my friends that the delay is inevitable from spring 2025 date. that was too optimistic. a cursory glance at the history of Rockstar’s releases in last decade would tell you that they delay their games atleast 3 times. The scope of their games demands time.
