India’s embassy in Tehran announced on Monday that Iran will suspend its visa-waiver facility for ordinary Indian passport holders starting November 22, following reports that Indian nationals were being lured to the country on fake job offers and kidnapped for ransom.
According to the advisory, several Indians were tricked into travelling to Iran using the visa-free entry scheme, where criminal groups posing as recruitment or travel agents abducted them upon arrival. To stop the misuse of the facility, Iran has halted visa-free entry for Indian citizens.
The embassy said that Indian travellers will now be required to obtain a visa to enter or transit through Iran. It urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid agents offering visa-free travel or onward passage to third countries via Iran.
The warning follows an incident in May when three Indian nationals from Punjab, Hushanpreet Singh, Jaspal Singh, and Amritpal Singh, went missing after landing in Tehran. Their families later said they had been kidnapped and held for ransom.
In early June, Iranian police rescued the trio in Varamin, south of Tehran, and the embassy confirmed that they were safe and under its care.
Indian authorities continue to urge citizens to exercise caution and use only verified travel channels when planning international journeys.
