Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam has been sanctioned by the ICC after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI against Sri Lanka.
The incident took place in the 21st over of Pakistan’s innings when Babar, visibly frustrated after his dismissal, struck the stumps with his bat before walking off the field. Match officials deemed it a violation of Article 2.2, which covers “abuse of cricket equipment or fixtures during an international match.”
The 31-year-old accepted the charge immediately, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. Match referee Ali Naqvi oversaw the sanction, while the on-field and TV umpiring team, including Alex Wharf, Rashid Riaz, Sharfuddoula, and Faisal Afridi, collectively reported the offence. He has since been fined 10% of his match fee and had one demerit point added to his record.
The ICC sanction marks a rare disciplinary moment for Babar Azam, who has long been known for his composed on-field behaviour. Level 1 breaches are considered minor in nature, typically resulting only in reprimands or small fines, with punishments capped at 50% of match fees and up to two demerit points.
Even with the brief moment of frustration, Babar ended the three-match series as Pakistan’s standout performer, amassing 165 runs, the highest tally for either side. His majestic 20th ODI century added yet another milestone to a career already brimming with statistical brilliance.
The single demerit point carries little immediate consequence, but players who accumulate four or more within a two-year window face suspension. For Babar, who has maintained a spotless record until now, the latest sanction is unlikely to have any long-term implications.
For Pakistan fans, the bigger takeaway remains his form: elegant, dominant, and vital as the team builds toward a packed 2026 calendar.
