Karachi Green Line Project to Restart With New Stations in Revised Plan

Work on the second phase of Karachi’s Green Line project is set to resume after officials from the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) met Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Friday to address concerns raised by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.

A PIDCL delegation, accompanied by the federal spokesperson for Sindh affairs, briefed the mayor on a revised implementation plan. Mayor Wahab said the Green Line extension would restart immediately and be completed within its officially approved timeline.

PIDCL officials assured him that the remaining construction would be completed within one year. The revised design includes a 1.8-kilometer stretch from Numaish Chowrangi to Municipal Park, which will now feature three additional bus stations.

KMC had halted the federally funded project in September, arguing that PIDCL had failed to obtain a required no-objection certificate before beginning work. The city’s municipal leadership questioned the federal company’s role in local development and insisted that all Karachi projects fall under municipal jurisdiction.

According to the statement, Mayor Wahab and Barrister Raja Khaliq uz Zaman Ansari will officially announce the restart of construction next week. The extension will include a Traffic Signal Priority system to improve BRT travel times.

The first phase of the Green Line currently serves around 80,000 passengers daily, and officials expect ridership to rise significantly once the extension opens.
