Pakistan is Now Officially Connected to One of the World’s Fastest Undersea Cables

Pakistan has reached another major milestone in its digital expansion with the onboarding of the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable, its third international cable system in a year. Federal IT and Telecom Minister Shaza Fatima confirmed the development on LinkedIn, calling it a significant step toward strengthening global connectivity and increasing national internet capacity.

The new system follows the recent arrivals of the Africa-1 and 2Africa cables, marking one of the fastest periods of growth in Pakistan’s subsea infrastructure. Transworld Associates (TWA), the landing partner for SEA-ME-WE 6, will initially add 4 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity, expanding Pakistan’s current 13.2 Tbps bandwidth by about 40 percent.

Stretching 21,700 kilometres, SEA-ME-WE 6 connects Pakistan to countries between Singapore and France. It is one of the most advanced high-capacity networks in the world, with a minimum design capacity of 132 Tbps across 10 fiber pairs. This system is built to support large-scale data flows needed for Pakistan’s digital economy, international business, and cloud-based platforms.

Alongside this subsea investment, TWA is building a Tier III certified data centre in Karachi. The facility will connect directly to major subsea systems, including SMW-6, SMW-5, TW1, and 2Africa. It will also be Pakistan’s first data centre designed to support high-density racks for AI workloads, offering scalable and secure hosting for critical national and international operations.

The data centre is scheduled to open in January 2026. It will serve businesses both inside and outside Pakistan, strengthening cloud infrastructure, enterprise networks, and content delivery services. Its Tier III certification ensures redundancy, high availability, and fault tolerance, positioning it as a key part of Pakistan’s growing digital and AI-focused ecosystem.

    • You should be sent along with her to learn. You’re both equally uneducated and unqualified to comment on these matters.

        • You keep asking to get proven wrong, but my internet is still fine, it has been fine for months.

Issues specific to one ISP (PTCL in this case) doesn’t affect others.

You can keep wearing your tinfoil hat and making up conspiracy theories though.

          • But my internet is fine = everyone is poor but I am rich so there is no issue

U sound like Marie Antoinette. The internet is slow as per PTA own statement in national assembly just 4 days ago. and the it minister said so as well. 😆 🤣

My tinfoil works and you still can’t prove me wrong

            • It has nothing to do with rich or poor. If a poor person can’t afford a higher speed internet package, that does not mean the internet is ‘slow’, they have just opted for a slower package. It is completely unrelated to the reason behind the ‘slowness’ that PTCL users are facing.

The issue is specific to PTCL because the two main cables they rely on are damaged so their total capacity is reduced. I am on a different ISP that does not rely on PTCL, therefore I am unafftected by the cable cuts and my internet has been working normally since September which is when the cuts were announced. I didn’t even mention what package I am using, that was your own assumption.

Lastly, if you just used your eyes and scrolled down, another commenter has mentioned that the SMW6 cable being referred to in this article is not actually live yet. Due to complications in the Red Sea, all upcoming submarine cables that were supposed to be active by Q4 2025 are delayed, so while their landings in Pak have been completed, they are not linked to the main cable system, therefore giving no benefit to the ISPs or internet users in this country.

          • Ok . So there is no poverty in pakistan bcz the prime Minister has a German luxury car ?

You used the lamest excuse ever. Your internet doesn’t mean others have the same speed.

Hence why I say prove me wrong

  • Wah Kya speed hay…. Apps ping time is still high aur ACHI WALI websites ko bye bye. We need freedom

  • Just to clarify: Africa 1 and 2Africa have only landed in Pakistan, but their capacities are not yet active—expected in Q1 2026. SMW6 hasn’t even landed yet and is still under subsea deployment. Not sure where the IT Minister is getting these half-baked reports from.

    • Even Q1 2026 is unrealistic. Both the cables you mentioned are delayed indefinitely until Red Sea issues are sorted out.

  • Nonsense, a country like Pakistan having Firewalls to slowdown social media, YouTube etc. It makes no difference even if thy are connected to even 10x faster cables of the world

  • Pakistán is following the right policy in confrontation with India.Hopefully, peaceful resolution would be found soon in such delicate geopolitical matter.Balance of power with Israel is key in the Middle East
