Karachi’s deteriorated road network is set for a major upgrade after Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved Rs. 25 billion for repair and fresh carpeting across the city.
Presiding over a meeting at the CM House, he directed authorities to start work immediately, stressing that the worsening condition of roads is contributing to heavy congestion and must be addressed without delay.
Officials briefed the chief minister that 315 internal streets across Karachi require urgent repair. He approved the entire package and instructed that drainage and sewerage systems be integrated with reconstruction so the roads do not deteriorate again during monsoon seasons.
The plan also includes reconstruction of 60 major arteries, which will be developed alongside necessary utility work to prevent repeated digging and ensure durability.
During the briefing, officials shared progress on ongoing mega projects. The Chief Minister was informed that Korangi Causeway Bridge is more than 80 percent complete and is expected to open by late 2025 or early 2026.
The 39-kilometer Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway is around 78 percent complete, with several sections already operational. A 22-kilometer Port Qasim–M9 link road is underway and is likely to open by the end of 2025.
Furthermore, the long-delayed Kareemabad Underpass, now 85 percent complete, is also scheduled to be finished this year. The chief minister emphasized that the coordinated rollout of these projects will help ease traffic flow and improve urban mobility across Karachi.
