AI shopping assistants are more widely available than ever, and the three major tools were put to the test: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity’s new shopping feature. The goal was simple: find the best laptop under $800, and the results highlight how each AI handles product research in very different ways.
ChatGPT’s Shopping Research mode acts like a guided buying assistant. When asked for laptops under $800, ChatGPT immediately responded with a set of multiple-choice questions on screen size, battery life, performance needs, gaming requirements, touchscreens, and portability.
After gathering preferences, ChatGPT spent a few minutes compiling recommendations. It returned a structured buying guide featuring several suitable models, pros and cons, spec comparisons, and estimated pricing. It even generated a comparison chart.
All links pointed to Best Buy, and some pricing was not perfectly current, something ChatGPT warned about due to its multi-source aggregation.
Gemini benefits from Google’s massive retail ecosystem. While ChatGPT focuses on personalization, Gemini uses scale and data, tapping into Google’s Shopping Graph, which includes over 50 billion product listings updated across retailers.
Gemini did not ask follow-up questions. Instead, it presented several laptop options within budget, linking to multiple stores and showing price-history details when available.
Google also offers broader AI shopping capabilities outside Gemini. Searches in AI Mode can surface deals, price trends, and AI-assisted purchase tools. In some cases, Gemini can even call local retailers to check stock or confirm promotions.
Perplexity recently introduced its shopping tools, building on its standard AI search experience. It has a shopping tab, which displays a clean grid of product cards with prices, ratings, pros and cons, and upgradeability notes.
It feels like browsing a modern online store enhanced with AI context. Perplexity also supports “instant buy” checkout through partner merchants.
However, one of its top suggestions exceeded the $800 budget, making the accuracy of its filtering less consistent.
All three tools performed well in different areas. ChatGPT stood out for guided decision-making. Gemini delivered the widest retailer coverage and the most complete pricing data. Perplexity provided an efficient, store-like browsing experience with fast purchase options.
To sum it up, ChatGPT might recommend the best laptop for now, but Gemini and Perplexity have their own valuable features but none of them can beat the good old manual research and shopping, yet.
