Islamabad to Host World Masters Weightlifting Championships

Islamabad is set to host the World Masters Weightlifting Championships in what officials describe as one of the biggest international sporting events ever held in the capital.

The combined World Masters (Grand Prix) and 2nd Asian Masters Weightlifting Championships will be held in Islamabad from February 6 to 12, 2026.

The event is expected to bring more than 500 athletes from seven continents and will feature competitions for both men and women.

President of the Pakistan Masters Weightlifting Federation, Arshad Khan, met with Secretary of the Inter-Provincial Coordination Ministry, Mohiyuddin Ahmad Wani, to review arrangements for the upcoming World Masters Weightlifting Championships.

During the meeting, the IPC Secretary instructed the Pakistan Sports Board to offer full support to the federation.

The Ministry of Interior and other concerned departments have also been called to a coordination meeting scheduled for Friday to finalize security and logistical plans.

Mohiyuddin Wani praised Arshad Khan for his long-standing contribution to the sport. The federation has also announced that the 2026 championship will be dedicated to Ma’raka-e-Haq.

Sports officials say the successful hosting of the competition will show Pakistan’s ability to organise international competitions, attract future global tournaments, and generate cultural and economic benefits for the country.
