The federal government is considering launching a new nationwide project to modernize all educational boards by equipping them with advanced technology on the pattern of the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE).
According to official documents, the proposed project aims to replicate FBISE’s successful “Modernization and Standardization of Examination System”, implemented between 2015 and 2018 for Rs50 million.
The initiative, conceived by then planning minister Ahsan Iqbal, was completed within three years and achieved all set targets.
Although the previous PML-N government planned to extend the model to provincial boards, the project stalled after the 2018 change of government and was formally surrendered in 2019 due to a lack of provincial interest.
Now, with Ahsan Iqbal once again heading the Planning Ministry and Dr Ikram Ali Malik, who executed the earlier project, serving as the FBISE chairperson, the government has revived plans to modernize all 30 examination boards across the country.
Officials said FBISE has prepared concept papers for the new initiative and will soon brief the planning minister. The estimated cost of the proposed project is Rs 2 billion.
Under the plan, three provincial data centres will be established, along with scanners, computer systems, customized software, staff training, and technical support.
The project also proposes the use of artificial intelligence in assessments, verbal communication testing, examiner certification programs, academic and resource audits, post-exam analysis, and publication of examiner reports.
Speaking to the media, FBISE Chairperson Dr Ikram Ali Malik said the board is already providing technical assistance and training to provincial boards, but stressed that new resources and manpower are required for full implementation.
He added that the ministries of Planning, Education, and FBISE are working closely on the project and noted that provinces have shown strong interest in modernizing their examination systems.
Recently, State Minister for Federal Education Wajiha Qamar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to technology-driven reforms, saying digital transformation would ensure transparent, credible, and student-centred examination processes nationwide.
