Routes Announced for Karachi’s Double-Decker Bus Service

Karachi will add five diesel-powered double-decker buses and 34 electric buses to its public transport network in January 2026, according to Sindh government officials.

The Sindh government has already imported a total of 39 buses from China at a cost of Rs. 3 billion. These include five double-decker buses and 34 electric vehicles. The buses have reached Karachi and are currently undergoing clearance at the Karachi Port Trust.

Officials said authorities plan to launch the new buses on city roads once the clearance process is completed. The Sindh Mass Transit Authority said the double-decker buses will operate on the Shahrah-e-Faisal route, running between Model Colony and Tower.

Each double-decker bus can carry around 115 to 120 passengers and features air conditioning. The buses also include adjustable roof sections that can remain covered during hot or rainy weather and be opened during pleasant conditions.

Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon is expected to formally inaugurate the new fleet during a ceremony scheduled around the launch period in January.

The introduction of double-decker buses marks the return of the service to Karachi after several decades, as the city last operated such buses in the 1960s and 1970s.

  • Nothing is good in Pakistan red bus is not good support for Pakistani awam bcz government take a more rent from Pakistani awam people didn’t happy from red or pink bus These buses are not of much benefit to the people of Karachi.

    • try to ride once, then make such awful comment bebe!
not a pro PPP person but we must appreciate them for this good initiative.
5 buses aren’t enough but would be a dood start, more to add in coming time!

  • Instead of investing on double decker and electric buses it was to be much better to invest this amount on repairing all broken roads.

    • The old phrase `Penny wise, Pounds foolish’ perfectly fits our planners in the government. Total lack of farsightedness and ill planning. The new buses will ply on the pot-holed roads the Godforsaken city is riddled with. Hence, the new buses wirh end up in the government junkyards, just likethe previous countless buses.

    • They do invest on roads, but to last for only one year. Instead of showing on paper purchase of so many busses, it would have been better to launch Metro trains on dedicated tracks.

    • totally agree.. sould be done but in a speedy way. dont knw why the influential and powerful management of Security Printing Press is not able to drag this matter into govt. officials.

  • an easy way of money laundring, repairing roads could not perform money laundring task,
who knows the cost of buses, who know how much paid, it is very easy to create GD as per your desire cost from chinese suppliers .

    • Well written comment by you. Since Sindh Government led by permanent plunderer party PPP so they work on the projects which suit them not the public. They are continuously investing funds in useless work. The roads conditions in metropoli is worsening day to day but they invested huge funds in city cameras for traffic echallans.

  • Good news. More buses should add along with also private sector should wellcome for investment in public tramsport sector. Public should also keep buses clean for better environment.

  • I am eager to ride on double decker bus. I ride once it was running from Meriwedar Tower to parts of the city. In my suggestion a single card system should be introduced in karachi government buses of Green line, Red,pink and double decker buses and for Circular trains like in Dubai and other countries. By this goverment earns more ticket money and reduces money losses

  • Stupid government stupid planning
They dnt even know how to and where to spend totally stupid management

  • Comparing to the these optical objects govt should invest in development of over all infrastructure of the city of Karachi id far better.

  • Sb buses jo b new niklty h same routes pa chlti h shara e faisal and etc baki areas wly lya kry har elaqy m chli chiye same areas ha selected jin m facilities di jati h hmesha

  • If govt construct the railway line instead off redline/greenline/double travker bus then save more time more fuel of public.
It will be completed withen two years.
Public is suffering since 3years on broken road with fuel charges.

  • @ Quaid Johar Dawson, Appreciate your eager to ride on double decker bus,But the deplorable condition of present Karachi Roads may ruin your own figure !!! 😉😜

  • Alham-dulillah, that’s very good, instead of starting from model colony, please start it from Malir cantt.

  • In my opinion it would be much more cost effective and long lasting, installation of rail track without damaging existing roads of modern and much specious tramways like Istanbul and other modern world Australia, Italy, Germany China , carrying much more Passengers ;rather to Investment and destruction of old steel roads of Karachi, for BRT’s where a bus could hardly carry maximum 50 person at a time. If it runs around 12hrs.playing 20 buses altogether 1000 person could be benefitted to reach the destination for which 100 ft road are occupied cutting out of 200ft exciting road where thousands of other transport have to run 24 hrs. Thus BRT will not be helpful for traffic rush, load, jamming road rather it will be increased due cutting and shortening the existing road.
