Sindh to Make Major Change to Winter Vacations Schedule

The Sindh Education and Literacy Department is reviewing a proposal to change the timing of winter vacations for schools beginning with the 2026–27 academic session, officials said.

Education officials are considering shifting winter holidays to January after observing that colder weather now peaks later in the season. Department officials said December has remained relatively mild in recent years, while January has recorded harsher winter conditions.

Under the existing academic calendar, schools close in late December and reopen on January 1, which requires students to attend classes during the coldest period.

The department will place the proposal before the Education Department Steering Committee for formal discussion. If the committee approves the change, schools across Sindh, including Karachi, will observe winter vacations in January instead of the last days of December.

Officials said the department introduced temporary measures during the current academic year after cold conditions intensified following school reopening. With approval from Sardar Shah, the department revised school timings for a limited period in January and directed schools to start classes at 9 a.m.
