Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi on Tuesday announced that Government Graduate College Asghar Mall, Rawalpindi, has been declared a national heritage site in recognition of its historical, educational, and cultural significance.
Addressing a ceremony at the college, the minister said a formal event would soon be held to officially confer the heritage status on the institution.
He described the college as a living symbol of knowledge, character, and Pakistan’s cultural legacy, and termed students the future of the nation.
Recalling Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s message to students, the minister stressed the importance of education for national progress.
He urged students to act as ambassadors of Pakistan abroad and project a positive image of the country.
The minister invited the college administration to sign cooperation agreements with cultural institutions under his ministry and assured full support.
He said the college would be allowed to use the ministry’s platforms free of cost to promote educational and cultural activities.
College Principal Professor Dr Tanveer Ahmed Khan Khichi said archaeology classes had been launched at the college, calling it a pioneering initiative at the college level.
The minister assured full cooperation from the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums.
The 113-year-old college building, constructed in 1913, reflects the educational and cultural heritage of the Potohar region.
Originally established as Sanatana Dharma High School in 1903, the institution was granted college status in 1948, becoming the first public-sector college in Potohar.
