Kite and string sales in Lahore crossed Rs540 million over three days as public excitement surged ahead of the Basant festival’s return after 25 years.
According to the Kite Association, more than 500,000 kites were sold on Tuesday alone, with markets, especially around Mochi Gate, witnessing heavy crowds as citizens prepared for the three-day festival scheduled from February 6 to 8.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb reviewed market arrangements and urged citizens to follow safety SOPs to ensure a safe celebration.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a major Basant event at Liberty Chowk on February 7, where a giant decorative kite has already been installed.
The Punjab government has declared public holidays on February 6 and 7 and allowed the manufacturing of kite-flying material in Lahore and four other districts, while security agencies have finalized safety arrangements.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast cold and dry weather on February 6 and 7, with partly cloudy conditions expected on February 8.
Winds between 10 and 15 km/h are expected to provide ideal conditions for kite flying, while authorities advised citizens to stay clear of electricity wires during celebrations.
