Pentagon Ends Academic Ties With Harvard

The Pentagon announced Friday that it will end all academic partnerships with Harvard University, cutting military education, fellowship, and certificate programs starting in the 2026–2027 academic year.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the decision follows concerns within the Trump administration that Harvard promotes ideological views that do not align with military objectives.

He added that officers currently enrolled in programs at Harvard will be allowed to complete their studies.

Hegseth also said the Department of Defense will review partnerships with all Ivy League institutions to determine whether they provide cost-effective strategic education compared with public universities and military-run graduate programs.

The move marks the latest escalation in the Trump administration’s dispute with Harvard.

Administration officials have accused several universities of failing to adequately protect Jewish students during pro-Palestinian campus protests and have pushed for financial settlements and policy changes.

The administration has also sought to reduce federal funding to Harvard and limit international student admissions, prompting concerns among academics about potential threats to academic freedom.
