Islamabad Expressway to Get New Service Road

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has taken a major step to address the growing traffic congestion on the Islamabad Expressway by initiating the process for construction and rehabilitation of a 9-kilometer service road from Faizabad Interchange to Gulberg Greens.

The project is expected to provide an effective alternative route for commuters facing severe traffic pressure on the main highway. According to officials, the proposed service road will run from Faizabad through key populated areas including Soan, Pindorian, Shakrial, Garden Town, Khanna, Kangal, Ghouri Town and Korral.

Once completed, the road will significantly ease daily commuting for thousands of residents traveling toward Islamabad and nearby commercial zones. CDA authorities stated that the project will be executed in phases, with the first phase covering the stretch up to Gulberg.

After completion of this portion, the service road will be extended further from Korral to Rawat, creating a continuous alternate traffic corridor along the expressway.

Officials believe the new service road will reduce travel time, improve traffic flow, and enhance connectivity for rapidly expanding residential sectors along the Islamabad Expressway. The initiative is part of CDA’s broader plan to upgrade road infrastructure and tackle long-standing congestion issues on one of the capital’s busiest routes.

  • There is a genuine need to rehabilitate the existing service roads and widening them on both sides of Expressway all the way till Rawat However it will not address the rush situation which is caused by:

    1 – Badly designed entry/exits on interchanges where turning traffic cuts into straight going traffic causing slow downs. All turning lanes should be physically isolated with barriers to ensure smoother traffic flow.

    2 – Commuter education and lane enforcement urgently needed. Slow commuters block fast lanes slowing down overall traffic.
    3 – All motorcycles should be forced into left- most concrete lanes. Their presence and weaving across fast lanes disrupts traffic and causes accidents. Sudden braking to save them cause accident pile-ups of multiple cars.

    4 – Frequent routes/blocking of traffic for VIP movements causes significant rush patches which severely slow down traffic across the Expressway.
    5 – Control of all trucks and heavy traffic by stopping all such movement in peak hours during morning (6:30AM till 10:30AM) and evening (3:30PM till 8:30PM) during normal days. Trucks must be stopped well before choking points and must be restricted to 1-2 lanes maximum on left side instead of leaving just one right-most lane open for commuters on roads like IJP and Expressway.
    6 – HTV lane discipline must be enforced with heavy fines alongside zero tolerance policy. This includes all Army and prison van convoys who frequently violate lane discipline.
    7 – Most important of all, removal of useless police checkpost at Faizabad adjacent to I-8 sector. It shows down traffic all the way to Karal interchange.
    8 – Hire qualified traffic management engineers rather than blocking and opening roads on adhoc basis at-will.

    Implementing all this will significantly alleviate rush on Expressway and ensure smoother traffic.

  • When all heavy traffic will divert to new ring road, the ŕush on express way automatically be reduced and no need of any service road.

  • The portion from zero point to Faizabad needs your attention first and foremost , after faizabad the traffic load gets shedded anyway.
