Karachi Education Board Raises Passing Marks

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has announced an increase in the minimum passing marks from 33 percent to 40 percent, introducing a new grading system for upcoming examinations.

According to the board, the revised criteria will apply to Class 9 examinations from 2026 and Class 10 examinations from 2027.

Under the new policy, students will need 40 marks out of 100 to pass a subject, replacing the previous requirement of 33 marks.

For papers carrying 75 marks, the passing marks have increased from 25 to 30, while in 60-mark papers, the requirement has been raised from 20 to 24.

Similarly, in 30-mark papers, students must now secure 12 marks instead of 10 to pass.

The board has also revised the criteria for practical examinations. Students will now need 18 marks out of 45 instead of 15, while the passing requirement in 15-mark practical components has increased from 5 to 6 marks.

Officials say the change aims to improve academic standards and align the system with other provinces. In Punjab, many examination boards already follow a 40 percent passing requirement.
