Motorway Police Start Fining Drivers Over New Speed Limits

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has stepped up enforcement against drivers violating newly introduced speed limits on motorways and national highways across the country.

Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed said action is being taken against violators while an awareness campaign is also underway to inform motorists about the revised speed limits.

As part of the campaign, motorway police officers are informing road users about the new limits at toll plazas and other key locations. Briefing camps have also been established in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Khanewal and Bahawalpur to guide drivers about the updated rules.

According to the motorway police, the speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles (LTV) on motorways has been reduced from 120 kilometres per hour to 100 kilometres per hour. The limit for public service vehicles (PSV) and heavy transport vehicles (HTV) has been reduced from 110 kilometres per hour to 90 kilometres per hour.

On national highways, the speed limit for cars and LTVs has been lowered from 100 kilometres per hour to 80 kilometres per hour, while the limit for PSV and HTV vehicles has been reduced from 80 kilometres per hour to 65 kilometres per hour.

The spokesperson said fines are also being issued for violations of the new limits. On Motorway M-2, a driver was fined Rs. 2,500 for driving at 115 kilometres per hour, while a passenger bus was fined Rs. 10,000 for travelling at 100 kilometres per hour.

  • It is much better to improve the infrastructure of roads, not to decrease the speed limit. It’s a good source to get more money from public when they leave house.

  • In My opinion, more fuel is consumed at lower speed at motorways. A reasonable speed would be 120 kmph on motorways, while from sukkur to Hyderabad, the speed limit mentioned is not attainable due to the condition of highway.

  • For many individuals, including myself, motorway driving can induce a hypnotic state. Maintaining a speed of 120 km/h often feels excessively slow and time-consuming, particularly when contending with this hypnotic effect. This situation presents a greater hazard than the speed itself. It is my professional opinion that the reduction of speed limits was ill-advised. Instead, those responsible for road management should undergo comprehensive training prior to implementing new traffic regulations. Consequently, I will not be adhering to these revised limits and will refrain from utilizing motorways.

  • What stupidity, 10 is no speed, they have done it knowingly that 100 is an annoying speed limit on motorway and that max number of people won’t follow it and the government will get more challan money

  • Follow any green number plate vehicle. They usually driving above 140 and can never be fined.

  • As earlier in 1997 on inauguration of M2 the speed limit was 140km/h which was reduced to 120km/h within a year , for 24 25 years speed limit was 12p and now it’s 100km/h then it is better to use GT road then

    • GT Road offers lesser distance also but the maintenance of vehicles and unruly traffic are an utter nuisance. One thus has to balance out between the two…
