South African Star Batter Announces Retirement from International Cricket

South African batter Rassie van der Dussen has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on his international career for the Proteas.

Rassie van der Dussen shared the news in a heartfelt statement on April 2, saying it was a decision made with both pride and gratitude after representing South Africa at the highest level. He described wearing the Proteas shirt as the greatest honor of his life and said the journey, while filled with sacrifice, had been worth every moment.

In his retirement note, the right-hander reflected on his upbringing in a cricket-loving household, saying he grew up alongside his brothers with deep respect for the Proteas badge and the game itself. He said carrying his family name onto the international stage had always felt like a responsibility he was proud to accept.

The veteran batter also paid tribute to the people and institutions that shaped his career. He thanked the Lions and their leadership for backing him over the years and said their support helped lay the platform for his rise in international cricket.

He also acknowledged Cricket South Africa, Enoch Nkwe, and the many coaches and managers who gave him the opportunity to represent his country.

Van der Dussen reserved special praise for his longtime agent and friend Chris Cardoso, crediting him for years of guidance, loyalty, and support at key moments throughout his career. He also thanked his wife Lara, calling her his biggest source of strength through both the highs and lows of professional cricket.

He ended his message by thanking South African fans, teammates, coaches, mentors, and friends, saying the connection he felt with supporters would stay with him forever. He made particular mention of hearing his nickname “MaThousand” from fans and of the unforgettable atmosphere of walking out to bat at a packed Wanderers Stadium.

The announcement was met with warm reactions from fans and members of the cricket community, many of whom praised van der Dussen for his dependable performances and his contribution to South Africa’s white-ball setup over the years.

He now appears set to focus on domestic cricket with the Lions while also passing on his experience to younger players coming through the system.
