Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday approved the establishment of a dedicated cyber crime unit aimed at tackling online harassment and blackmail, particularly targeting women and children.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister to address the rising incidence of social media abuse.
Under the initiative, victims will no longer be required to visit police stations to file complaints, as mobile complaint units will be deployed to register cases at their doorstep.
Authorities said complaints can also be lodged through a virtual police station, front desks and the Punjab Police Khidmat Markaz (PKM) app. The government has assured that the identities of victims will remain fully confidential.
Officials said legislation is also being prepared to introduce strict penalties for those involved in online harassment and blackmail, with work underway on the proposed Punjab Online Safety Act 2026.
The plan includes the establishment of a Cyber Patrol Wing and a Cyber Police Academy to strengthen enforcement and capacity building.
