Quetta Gladiators spinner Usman Tariq has explained his on-field exchange with Daryl Mitchell following confusion over his bowling action during their Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) match at the National Bank Stadium.
Speaking during a PSL Pitch Side segment, Tariq described how the conversation unfolded after Mitchell appeared uncertain while facing him.
“When Daryl Mitchell stepped back, I asked him what happened. He said, ‘You were taking a pause.’ I replied that I could take a pause a second time, a third time, and even a fourth time. Then it was clarified to him that he cannot do that; Usman’s action is within the laws,” Tariq said.
The incident occurred in the ninth over of the chase, with Tariq bowling. His action, which includes a brief pause in his delivery stride, seemed to disrupt Mitchell’s timing.
On two occasions, the batter stepped away from the crease, visibly struggling to adjust. The umpire then intervened and clarified the situation to Mitchell.
Tariq’s bowling action has drawn attention before. Earlier this year, during a T20I against Australia, Cameron Green appeared frustrated after being dismissed by Tariq. Green gestured a “throwing” motion while walking back to the pavilion, seemingly questioning the legality of the action.
A similar situation arose during last year’s ILT20, when MI Emirates batter Tom Banton appeared to suggest Tariq’s delivery was “thrown” during a qualifier match.
Responding to such criticism, Tariq said his arm structure makes his action appear unusual. “There are two corners on my elbow which make it hard for me to straighten fully,” he explained.
He added that bowlers accused of chucking typically undergo lab testing and may adjust their actions, which can create confusion among viewers. Tariq emphasized that he has already been tested.
“I have undergone two official tests in Pakistan, and my action was cleared. Unlike others, I didn’t have to change anything. I am confident because I know I am not throwing,” he said.
Usman Tariq has been reported for a suspect bowling action twice in his career but was cleared both times. Last year, an ICC-accredited biomechanics lab approved his action after he delivered 24 balls under testing conditions.
