Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the deployment of electric buses in 10 districts as part of efforts to expand public transport across the province.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the chief minister, where progress on mass transit projects in Gujranwala and Faisalabad was also reviewed.
Under the plan, electric buses will be introduced in Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin and Okara.
Officials informed the meeting that 100 electric buses will arrive in Punjab during the current month, followed by 350 buses by mid-May and another 264 by the end of June. Dedicated bus depots will be established in each division to support operations.
The chief minister also sought a plan to introduce 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level. A progress report on Punjab’s first e-taxi scheme was presented, with 194 vehicles expected to arrive in May and 208 in June.
Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to complete construction and renovation of metro bus stations at the earliest and approved new designs for the facilities.
The meeting also reviewed the “Empower Her” project and granted in-principle approval for an e-bike project for government employees. Officials said more than 125,000 passengers have benefited from 21 routes under the free transport program, with buses completing 3,560 trips so far.
