Telecom Networks Likely to Get Smart Transformers Amid Loadshedding

The federal government is considering providing smart transformers to mobile operators to protect telecom infrastructure from the impact of prolonged loadshedding. The proposal was presented to a Senate subcommittee on Information Technology, where officials reviewed ongoing challenges affecting internet and mobile services across the country.

The discussion took place during a meeting chaired by Senator Sadia Abbasi.

Officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority informed the committee that increasing loadshedding has become a major issue for telecom operators. They stated that although operators are not electricity defaulters, they are still facing power outages lasting up to 12 hours in certain areas. This situation is making it difficult to maintain uninterrupted communication services.

The committee was told that telecom towers typically have battery backup for only one to two hours, which leaves mobile and internet networks vulnerable during extended electricity outages. PTA officials urged lawmakers to recommend an uninterrupted power supply for telecom infrastructure, stressing that stable electricity is necessary to ensure reliable internet services across the country.

As part of efforts to improve network resilience, telecom companies are also shifting toward solar-powered tower operations to reduce dependence on the national grid. Officials said that the proposed smart transformers could further protect telecom networks from power disruptions and help reduce service outages for consumers.

The meeting also highlighted the increasing importance of internet connectivity as an essential service. It also discussed reports regarding satellite internet in remote areas, particularly in Balochistan. Committee members noted that although reports about satellite internet continue to circulate, no satellite internet operators have been formally registered in the country.

Lawmakers emphasized the need to improve digital connectivity using both traditional and emerging technologies to meet rising public demand for reliable communication services.
