The Power Division has established Pakistan’s first Data Governance Council for the power sector, marking a major step toward modernizing data management, improving transparency, and strengthening decision-making across the country’s electricity industry.
The council has been formed under the leadership of Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari and includes representation from all major power sector institutions.
Under the new framework, data from generation companies, distribution companies, transmission entities, and regulatory bodies will be integrated into a single coordinated system.
Previously, individual organizations maintained separate databases and reporting structures, often resulting in inconsistent information and challenges for policymakers.
Officials said the lack of harmonized data had affected planning, forecasting, and operational decision-making, while weak quality controls and limited data security measures contributed to conflicting reports across the sector. The new governance structure is intended to address these issues through standardized data management practices.
The Data Governance Council has been designed in line with the internationally recognized DAMA DMBOK framework. A central data repository will be established under the council’s supervision to serve as a single source of verified and authoritative information for the entire power sector.
The government expects the move to support faster investment decisions and enhance Pakistan’s attractiveness as a destination for long term foreign investment in the energy sector.
A spokesperson for the Power Division described data as a critical national asset and said the establishment of the council represents a historic step toward building a more transparent, accountable, and efficient governance framework for Pakistan’s power sector.
