Lawmakers Demand Transparency in Govt-Funded Nursing Training Program

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Education has raised serious questions regarding the transparency of a multi-million rupee government-funded nursing training project and the ongoing administrative collapse at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST).

During a meeting at Parliament House chaired by acting chairperson Mahtab Akbar Rashdi, the committee demanded a detailed briefing from the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC).

The inquiry focuses on the selection of the International Centre for Skills (ICS) as a partner for the NCLEX Nursing Training Program.

Lawmakers expressed shock that 500 trainees were selected without public advertisement, despite the government spending approximately Rs300,000 per candidate.

The committee highlighted that such lack of transparency undermines meritocracy in public-funded initiatives.

The panel also addressed the severe financial turmoil at FUUAST, where delayed salaries and pensions have led to widespread employee unrest.

Criticizing the university’s leadership for its failure to stabilize the institution, the committee urged the Vice Chancellor to take proactive steps to secure funding and resolve the governance crisis.

Additionally, the committee reviewed the regulatory framework for Cambridge qualifications in Pakistan, seeking to ensure that international education providers adhere to national standards and HEC guidelines.

The session concluded with a directive for both NAVTTC and the Ministry of Education to submit comprehensive reports on these matters in the next meeting.
