Pakistan Railways to Restore, Modernize 2 Historic Railway Stations

Pakistan Railways has finalized master plans to restore, conserve and modernize the historic Lahore and Taxila Railway Stations, aiming to preserve their heritage while upgrading passenger facilities.

According to Pakistan Railways, the Punjab government will support the implementation of the projects following directives from the provincial leadership.

The restoration plans focus on preserving the stations’ original architecture and historical identity while improving infrastructure, accessibility, safety and passenger amenities. Unauthorized additions will be removed, and both stations will receive upgraded lighting, landscaping and modern public facilities without compromising their heritage value.

At Lahore Railway Station, the project includes structural repairs, restoration of the heritage building and platforms, improved drainage, heritage-style lighting, a modern family lounge, upgraded reservation and information areas, and new passenger facilities.

At Taxila Railway Station, the plan features pedestrian walkways, organized parking, modern washrooms, restoration of the historic ticket office, conversion of the old goods warehouse into a café and restaurant, landscaped public spaces, and heritage displays showcasing Taxila’s cultural legacy.

Pakistan Railways said the projects will follow international heritage conservation standards while promoting tourism, improving passenger services and supporting the adaptive reuse of historic railway buildings.
