Just a month ago, the Lahore motorway rape incident sent shock waves all across the country. Social media was furious and people came out on the roads to demand justice for the survivor. But it seems that another possible motorway incident was about to occur in the premises of Karachi University.
Last night, a Facebook post went viral where a senior year student from IBA (KU campus) reported an incident of alleged abduction and rape.
“I am writing this from a state of shock and trauma to inform you all that I and my female friend just escaped another possible Motorway incident God forbid, INSIDE KU premises. Please read it so that you all can protect yourselves too.”

Is Karachi University Not Safe?
Syed Shaheer Ali and two of his female friends were coming back from a friend’s birthday party. He had to drop one of them at IBA Girl’s Hostel and at around 11:30 pm, he dropped her and was going towards Maskan with one female passenger on the back.
“As soon as we crossed safeet, 4 bikes appeared out of nowhere with total of about 10 people on them, and surrounded our car shouting “Bahar nikaal”, “Bahar aa”, “Bahar nikaal inko”.
“Trust me I was shaking to death realizing what’s gonna happen next. It was pitch dark in KU, complete silence and we were stuck around the bushes. I tried my best to hold my nerves and pressed the accelarator to full as i tried to run away.”

Narrating the whole incident, Shaheer mentioned that they managed to escape and reached near IBA’s Boys Hostel, however, the culprits came again and ‘surrounded us forcing me to stop the car’.
“That’s when they came to the car’s window banging and screaming Larki ko Bahar nikaal, Gaari Roukk, Bahar aa…”
One can never imagine the trauma and after experiencing it within the premises of Pakistan’s largest university, anyone could go in a state of shock.
“They had just one intention, and if they had been successful to get inside the car, they would have have beaten me and thrown me aside, and then… You all know what would have happened with the girl.”
Continuous Patrolling of Rangers and security. Installation of CCTV cameras and street lights on urgent bases.

He further added,
“Somehow I managed to escape, pushing my car to the limits. We informed the gaurds on the Maskan gate. These guys looked around the age of 15 to 25 years but the barbaric look in their eyes was beyond what words can explain…”
The management at IBA is investigating into the situation and the Rangers/security authority of Karachi University need to step in to find the culprits.
#Karachiuniversityisnotsafe is trending on Twitter and people are demanding authorities to take strict action against it.
Furthermore, Karachi University is huge. Yet there are still areas that don’t have street lights and are considered as ‘dangerous’.
The university turns into a haunted house as it gets dark and certain areas become ideal for incidents like these. This is not the first time someone has come up and shared their story, but thousands of people (mostly women) have been through a similar situation.
The administration needs to take this matter seriously and they should immediately install cameras and street lights. Rangers and police within the university premises should stay alert and patrol the institute more often during the night.
