Popular Islamic scholar, Ismail ibn Musa Menk, (aka Mufti Menk), enjoyed some quality with his family in Dubai. The 47-year-old Grand Mufti set social media abuzz with a picture of himself on a flyboard (a pair of boots with jet nozzles for fun water sports).
A netizen called the Zimbabwean scholar out for not being a ‘real sheikh’ and reasoned that the Grand Mufti should be concerned about his Ummah (Muslim community) and not “waste time” in indulging in sich recreational activities.
Mufti Menk schooled the rude individual in a humble manner, preaching the importance of maintaining a balance between life and religion.
He said,
Real sheikhs wouldn’t ever see your comment on social media either and take the time to reply. A few minutes spent every year doesn’t determine the genuineness or not of a person. Rasulallah (Prophet Muhammad) also engaged in many recreative activities with his family. We must be balanced. Our children and family members have a right over us. Concern for the Ummah is only possible if you have concern for your own family first.
People on social media praised Mufti Menk’s wise response to the commenter.
Here are a few reactions to it:

Mufti Menk is a very popular Islamic scholar from Zimbabwe. He is well-known for his ability to relate religious teachings to contemporary settings. His method of preaching Islam as well as his sense of humor has not only made him very influential among the Muslim youth but has endeared him to non-Muslims as well.
