A young Portuguese tourist lost his life in a fatal road accident on the RCD highway near Dalbandin town in Chagai district, Baluchistan on Thursday.
The victim, identified as Nuno Miguel Vilao Castanheria, aged 28, was a globetrotter on a mission to travel to over 50 countries on his motorbike in the next two years.
had crossed into Pakistan from Iran the previous evening on his motorbike, and was en route to Quetta, accompanied by two fellow adventurers from Germany, Tony Pankraz Linder and Nikolas Lang.
Federal Levies personnel were providing escort for the trio when Mr. Castanheria’s motorbike collided with a pickup truck.
The collision proved fatal, claiming Castanheria’s life on the spot, as confirmed by Chagai Deputy Commissioner Hassan Jan Baloch.
In the aftermath of the accident, law enforcement officials acted promptly. The driver of the pickup truck involved in the collision and his helper were apprehended by Levies personnel.
Castanheria’s travel documents indicated that he was in Pakistan on a tourist visa. The tragic incident prompted immediate communication with the Foreign Office in Islamabad.
The victim’s body was subsequently transported to Quetta, where arrangements were made for its onward journey to Islamabad before being handed over to the Portuguese embassy.
Nuno Castanheira’s adventurous spirit was evident in his mission, aptly named ‘Mission Unplug.’ According to his website, his journey commenced on May 21 from his home country of Portugal.
Over the course of his travels, he traversed multiple European and Middle Eastern countries, finally arriving in Iran in July.
His ambitious plans included exploring Pakistan’s northern areas before crossing into India through the iconic Wagah border in Lahore.
