A New Type of Crime Spree: Two Restaurants in Islamabad Get Robbed in a Month

What is happening to Islamabad?

dine-and-dash

Dining and dashing for the exit without paying the bill is becoming a common occurrence in Islamabad. There’s a gang of four who were involved in not one but two dine-and-dash incidents in the capital city.

Two restaurants in the F-7 area, namely Loafology Bakery and Café, and Petit Brugge have reported cases of people fleeing without paying the bill on February 10th and 16th respectively.

According to the staff at Loafology Bakery and Café, the group did not just dine-and-dash but also physically assaulted their servers.

“A group of three men had come to the cafe on Monday (February 10),… They were apparently waiting for someone.”

SAMAA Digital reported that one of the waiters Owais was assaulted by the group.

“After a while, a woman entered and one of the three men joined her at a separate table, … Both groups ordered food and after they were done eating the man dining with the woman told me that he would come back after dropping her off.”

After 10 minutes, the first man did not return and his friends asked the server to get them print-outs of their bills and accompany them to their car to retrieve their wallets.

“They claimed that they had left their wallets in their car and asked me to accompany them,”

Once outside the men got into their car, they shoved Owais, mocked him, and drove off without paying the bill.

The management of Loafology Bakery and Café had CCTV footage of the incident. They shared photographs from that CCTV footage of the group and shared it on their Facebook page.

“They had a silver Honda Civic (2002 model),” …. It had a Lahore number plate which was half broken.”

The thieves strike again

A week later, a similar dine-and-dash incident took place at Petit Brugge, another restaurant in F-7, Islamabad.

Four men had dined in and then left, claiming to get cash from an ATM. Was it a coincidence that their method was the same as the group of four that conned the Loafology staff?

The four men asked a member of the staff to accompany them to the ATM. They wanted to drive to another ATM. They asked the server Aizaz to sit in the car with them, but later shoved him out of the car, mocked him, and drove off.

“On the way, the client told waiter Aizaz that they wanted to drive to another ATM and he should accompany them, …. Just when he was about to get into the car, one of the guys pushed Aizaz causing him to fall in the middle of the road and then they made fun of him,”

Over at social media, photographs of the culprits from Pettite Brugge were also shared. Unfortunately, 19-year-old Aizaz who is working part-time to finance his studies, could not note the vehicle’s details.

Could this be the same group be behind both incidents, given the similarity in their methods? We will have to wait and see for law enforcement authorities to track them down.
