Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Announces Separation With Wife After 18 Years

Both parties have formally entered in legal separation agreement.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie announced yesterday that they were separating in an unexpected announcement that appeared to mark the end of the couple’s 18-year high-profile marriage.

Trudeau wrote on Instagram.

After many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.

His now ex-wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau posted a similar message on her account.

The couple has three children — 15-year-old Xavier,14-year-old Ella-Grace, and 9-year-old Hadrien. They requested the public to respect their privacy for the well-being of their children.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Trudeaus have signed a legal separation agreement. The statement also reads,

They remain a close family. Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together.

It was also conveyed that the family plans to spend an upcoming vacation together, commencing next week.

Trudeau will be the first prime minister to go through a separation while in still office since his father and mother split in 1977.

Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, an advocate for gender equality, was working as a reporter when she met Trudeau in 2003. They married two years later. Trudeau was only 43 when he became prime minister in late 2015 and the sharply-dressed couple quickly captured the attention of the world media. In October 2015, the New York Post dubbed her “the hottest first lady in the world.”
