Legal Battle Between Meesha Shafi and Ali Zafar Takes a Dramatic New Turn

The ‘Muaziz Sarif’ singer’s credibility has been called into question in Ali Zafar defamation case

In a dramatic turn of events, singer/songwriter Meesha Shafi has admitted to giving a false statement during the proceedings of a defamation case filed against her by fellow musician Ali Zafar.

Meesha had accused the Teefa in Trouble star of sexual harassment back in 2018, a charge that was vehemently denied by Ali Zafar, who then filed a defamation suit against Shafi.

In a recent hearing at a Lahore sessions court on Thursday, Zafar’s lawyer, Advocate Tariq Gul, questioned Shafi about the evidence of sexual harassment that she had submitted in court. The evidence in question was a photo of Shafi and Zafar together for Ayesha Fazli’s birthday that she herself had uploaded on Facebook with the caption “tonight we party.”

Gul argued that the photo could not be considered evidence of sexual harassment because Meesha Shafi had posted it on social media. He further questioned Shafi’s claim that she was never summoned by the court, noting that she had made a “deliberate misrepresentation” of the court order.

In response, Meesha Shafi claimed that her statement about the court summons was a “slip of the tongue.” She also admitted that the photo she had submitted as evidence was not a reliable indicator of sexual harassment.

The court documents were shared by Barrister Ambreen Qureshi on Twitter.

The admission by Meesha Shafi is a significant development in the long-running legal battle between the two musicians. Zafar’s legal team has hailed it as a vindication of their client’s innocence.

Meanwhile, Shafi’s supporters are seeing it as an over-exaggeration, stating it a ploy by Ali Zafar’s team to “save face” as he is under severe criticism for his “head-over-heels” performances for controversial Indian poet Javed Akhtar.
