Desi Twitter is reacting strongly as trans-activist Mehrub Moiz Awan AKA Shumaila Bhatti was removed from a panel of speakers at the TEDx conference.
The event is scheduled to take place at the International School Lahore on August 20. While there are TEDx events organized by the educational institute, many such events are independently organized with the permission to use the brand’s name. At one such event, Dr. Mehrub Moiz Awan, a researcher, policy specialist, and comedian, was invited to speak.
Based on tweets by Mehrub, she was removed due to some parents’ disapproval over having a transgender speaker.
“In a meeting to review my draft speech, which according to the ISL admin is absolutely up to the mark of all TEDx regulations, I was informed that I am being removed from the speaker’s panel because some parents have stated that they can’t allow transgender people to speak to their kids. No objections to the talk, no additional censorship, just flat-out refusal…”
their kids. This is the International School Lahore btw. No objections to the talk, no additional censorship, just flat out refusal because "parents ko aitraaz hai k koi transgender talk day"
Their exact words. Verbatim. Is this even legal? And if it is, is this censorship?

The YouTuber known as ‘Shumaila Bhatti’ is a prominent face of the Khwajasira community in Pakistan. So Netizens reacted to TEDxISL barring her.
Censorship is engraved in social norm consistently hammered in society again social group who challenges these rotten ideologies. These elite school systems are the custodians of terrible ideologies and are scared to adopt and embrace diversity. Custodians of orthodoxy

i wonder if TEDx in Pakistan is a separate entity and works solely independent of the TEDx international ?
TEDx as an organisation should have enough of standing not to compromise on a serious issue like this. If they can't provide platform on very human rights, they better quit— Shazia Mehmood Khan (@ShaziaMehmood10) August 16, 2022
Even celebs pitched in.
However, not all were supportive as designer Maria B. She supported ISL’s decision. Maria, whose daughter is a student at ISL, claimed that parents have a right to decide the right role models for their children.
She asserted the need to educate children on the difference between ‘genderless and transgender people’. Even using the word ‘hermaphrodite’ at some point.
“Children need to know the difference between genderless and the trans community.”
Responding to Maria B.’s misconceptions about the Khwajasira community, Mehrub tweeted how transphobia continues to be perpetuated by the elite bourgeois.
“I’ve always said transphobia is and will always be perpetuated by the elite bourgeois but hidden behind overzealous religious vigilantes… It allows them to maintain their riches and hegemony in a highly unequal society while hiding behind morality and public sensitivities.”
I've always said transphobia is and will always be perpetuated by the elite bourgeoise but hide behind over zealous religious vigilantes. Goli beshak ap ka middle class fanatic chalaye, lekin moral policing ki philosophy yeh elite bourgeoise hi laatay hain

It allows them to maintain their riches and hegemony in a highly unequal society, while hiding behind morality and public sensitivities.
It'd be difficult to understand, but then they're too transparent and easy to understand.

Aside from Mehrub trying to educate her, Joyland director Saim Sadiq also took a jibe at her.
Four speakers from the panel, including historian Ammar Ali Jan and educationist Ghazi Taimoor, have boycotted the event after Mehrub was removed.
Pathetic! This is a huge loss for the young audience who would have gained fascinating insights from Dr. Mehrub Moiz Awan's talk. I was supposed to be a speaker at the event but will boycott it in solidarity with Dr. Awan and the trans community. https://t.co/OiLD1YDm6E

Transphobia is unacceptable and as an educator, these are not the values I want institutions to encourage. In solidarity with Dr. Mehrub Moiz Awan who is being silenced for her trans identity, I am boycotting and will no longer be speaking at TEDx ISL. https://t.co/gyOYl93ZYk

I Support Maria.B. we have a right to decide. Four panel members are supporting Dr Meerub . Which is ridiculous. Are they educationist unaware ?
