Pakistani actress Mehwish Hayat gave a befitting response to Amitabh Bachchan over his refusal to take on the role of a Pakistani.
Big B was set to play a Pakistani protagonist in Resul Pookutty’s The Sound Story. The movie will be the Oscar-winning sound designer’s directorial debut.
Load Wedding actress Mehwish Hayat, expressed her disappointment on the artist’s bias and instances when ‘nationalism trumps everything’.
“If true, this is very disappointing. Movies have the power to build bridges especially when tensions are high. I guess that in the end nationalism trumps everything – I hope that we can also take heed before we gush about all things Bollywood in future”

Mehwish Hayat is one of the most sought-after actresses in the Pakistani entertainment industry. She was recently awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for her contribution to cinema and art.
Bollywood’s Shehenshah was in talks with Resul Pookutty for two years now. In fact, sources claim Big B liked the message of peace the movie preaches.
“Resul had been discussing the script for his directorial debut with Bachchan Saab for two years now. Bachchan Saab loved the peace message in Resul’s Indo-Pak story. Resul waited for Bachchan Saab’s dates and they were finally supposed to go on the floors, when because of the worsening relations between the two countries, Bachchan Saab had second thoughts.”
Why Back Out Now?
Word is that Bachchan did what he did due to sky-rocketing tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan.
Following a suicide attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama, relations went South between the two. The attacks were followed by India’s Balakot airstrikes.
As a result, all contact including cultural ties between India and Pakistan were put on hold. Bollywood banned Pakistani artists and Pakistan enforced a Bollywood ban.
Back in Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan is currently working on period drama Brahmastra. The movie is directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar. Brahmastra cast real-life couple Alia Bhatt and Rabir Kapoor as an onscreen couple.
Amitabh’s crime thriller Badla opposite Taapsee Pannu is also creating noise in the niche film buff community.
