Snow Leopard Hunted Down By Locals in Swat [Pictures]

The locals posted pictures of the poor animal online.

Hunting and killing of wildlife is sadly very common practice in Pakistan. Whether it is some foreigner hunting endangered wildlife or the locals killing some wild animal that accidentally stumbled into their village, new wildlife protection laws are badly needed.

Recently, locals of Swat hunted down a leopard that had entered the Fazal Banda village on Tuesday.

The locals hunted down one leopard while the other escaped in Nahag Dara jungle in Upper Dir. The two leopards were responsible for injuring three villagers in Swat’s Matta Tehsil. According to reports by the Matta Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Shoukat Ali, the two big cats entered the village in search of food after heavy snowfall in the surrounding hilly areas.

The locals stated that they felt compelled to open fire on the wild animals as the leopards attacked the residents and injured people.

The locals posted their pictures with the killed animal on social media. This sparked an outrage on the internet as people demanded law against the killing of wildlife. Experts believe that leopards do not enter populated places or villages unless there is a shortage of food or a loss of habitat.

Similar incidents have also taken place in Abbottabad, Manshehra, Darra Adam Khel and other hilly areas of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) province in the recent past. Policymakers should work on wildlife rehabilitation programs to prevent such instances and ban the hunting of animals for sport. Share your thoughts on the matter.
