Recently PTCL came up with a revolutionary service called Smart TV, and now PTCL has been offering this for FREE till December 31, 2008. It is just like the TATA SKY which has made a lot of buzz in India. This TV service works using Internet Protocol (IP) Technology.

The set-top box is free, really! or is it just till 31st december and after that they will charge for the set-top box if we opt to keep the service ?
well here are the hidden details of this free package i called the helpline and the ptcl representative explained to me the whole deal.first of all the set top box fee which is 9995 Rs will not be paid now but it will have to be paid in full or in 500Rs per month installments from jan 2009.plus the vod service is free till dec31st 2008. after that Rs 50 will be charged per vod a single vod can be played unlimited number of times during 24 hrs.
@ayub, Thanks for sharing that info. Last night i also called PTCL Help line, but there was no one to answer. But today morning i have also called and confirmed that PTCL will take following charges:
– Rs.500 for Set Top Box monthly or pay lumsum Rs.9995.
– Rs.50 for the VODs.
@فر I have also checked that LCD problem. It is fine. There is not such issue. Channel delay is not much. And the service as a whole is good but very costly.
Good publicity by PTCL to tackle the customers. Now, I think that i will cut down my service just before 31t December. Until PTCL make this Set Top Box Free.

Our counter part Tata Sky India works through Satellite :
They have two packages. Tata sky base package uses an economical hardware so everyone can afford the best quality and cheap monthly charges. It is just like our usual Cable TV but with more than 100 channels. But with many add on and interactive services.
Tata Sky + uses the expensive hardware for the rich people. It gives the function of rewinding like PTCL Smart.

PTCL has come up directly with that expensive hardware. Until they introduce an economical hardware package, the service is not going to be a success. Country is going to through economic turmoil. PTCL have to scale down the prices otherwise some one else will take its market. Like the upcoming Wateen and Naya Tel, both uses fibre optic to bring crystal clear channels. They have already come up with the cable Tv.

Smart PTCL TV disadvantages:
1) only one TV can be viewed at a time. specifically the remote for channel changing is only one, whereas in cable, you can give connection to multiple TV’s with different programme viewing option.
2) sometimes broadband connections slows down. your TV will go blank.
3) Not all channels are on PTCL. mostly indian channels. so it is important to know which channels you would like to watch, and whether they are available in the PTCL list.
4) More power consumption. Not significantly more, but you still need to power the modem and the the smart TV box.
5)Cost of set box is very high, in fact it should not be charged at all.
