This Nifty Device Tells You If Your USB-C Cables Are Safe or Not

The USB Type-C standard increasingly appears to be the single, unifying port for every platform but compatibility seems like a big concern at this stage.

Researchers have found even the official, bundled chargers to be not completely safe either, which signals a world of disaster in the open-market.

Thankfully, a new option could be helpful for people who have to deal with Type-C accessories often. Called the USB Power Meter, the device goes into a USB port in your computer.

At the other end is a port which houses a USB Type-C port, which when connected to a cable displays the level of power, mainly the amps and voltage being transfer. The amount of energy which has been transferred is also displayed.

From there, you can see whether the power level drawn is either too high or too low. In especially the case of the former, it is recommended that you find an alternative, as a faulty USB-C cable is found to be much more lethal than its non-reversible Type-A predecessor.

The USB Power Meter is available and priced at $30. For that, it should last you a pretty long time and guarantee survival of your precious gadgets and the data stored in them.

The Type-C Power Meter is not only targeted to dealers, but also people who don’t want to risk their expensive MacBook, which only support the connectivity standard for all but one model. In the meantime, you can make sure that you get your cables from only reputable sources.
